Our Philosophy

The High Plains Christian School is operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church with the goal to provide a spiritually oriented education for children. A belief in the existence of the Creator God is fundamental in the philosophy of Seventh-day Adventist schools. We respect His divine authority and recognize His intervention in human affairs. We believe that true education develops the spiritual, mental, and physical powers of each student; preparing them for the joy of service in this life and for the higher joy of service in the life to come. To achieve this goal, we encourage each student to:

  • develop a personal relationship with God and his fellow men as stated in Matthew 2:37-39
  • master the basic academic skills
  • value labor, physical and mental, as the blessing God intended
  • cultivate physical fitness, mental ability, and moral purity as the blessing God intended.

The High Plains Christian School is operated in harmony with the guidance and direction of the Office of Education, North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Our History

The Garden City Seventh-day Adventist church was first organized in 1908 which began in homes and moved to rented spaces. By 1927, a school had been started in a church member’s home. In 1931, land was purchased and a basement dug as the beginning of a church. The church members met here until a building was finished above it in 1941. By 1945 there was a school on the adjacent property. The school was a 10 grade, two teacher school which closed again in 1954.

In 1977, the school reopened in the same location, next door to the church. Students could walk over to the basement of the church to access its facilities.

On November 3, 1988, a groundbreaking was held for a new school at the current location and a cement slab was poured. Maranatha volunteers came in the spring to begin building. The larger classroom, hallway bathrooms, and kitchen were the original building on the current property.

In August of 1989, the original properties were sold and the church and school moved into the new building, sharing the large classroom space for school and church services. Groundbreaking for the new sanctuary took place two years later and in April of 1999, the church was dedicated after being built without debt, thanks to volunteers and local members.

In 2009 the school closed but was reopened in 2015 as High Plains Christian School. The school reopened with 7 students and by August 2020, 24 students were enrolled. The school was able to add a second teacher again in Fall 2021.
