Is science part of your school’s curriculum?

Yes! Science is a fundamental part of our students’ education. We use a curriculum called By Design, which is a creation-based series of textbooks. The lessons incorporate a Christian worldview and include Bible verses that relate to the topic discussed. Do not be surprised however, these textbooks provide a highly rigorous curriculum.

Does my family need to be a member of this church for my child to attend?

No, High Plains Christian School welcomes all applicants who desire a Christian education. We do not require your family to be members of our church, or to attend our church regularly. We only ask that your child is able to participate in occasional school programs that take place at our church.

Only two teachers cover Kindergarten through Eighth grade? How does a multi-grade classroom work?

While it is a surprise to many, multigrade education is an extremely effective form of instruction that is an integral part of American history. Early rural schools in the United States had one teacher who instructed students from 1st Grade through 8th Grade. It was not until the the mid-1900s that these schools began to be consolidated into the larger schools we are now familiar with.

Multigrade instruction is a mix of small group instruction and whole group instruction, similar to how teachers in single grade classrooms facilitate 25 students working on different levels. Subjects like math and reading instruction are done on individual grade levels to facilitate the important levels of instruction needed. Other subjects like science and social studies are grouped in grade levels of two or more with the teacher creating instruction and practice that can be differentiated across the various levels taught.

Students in a multigrade classroom learn skills that they would otherwise not master. There is a need for them to be independent at times and able to think critically as the teacher is not able to guide their every step. Students learn to manage their time and solve some of their own problems. These students also get a rare opportunity to see and hear instruction from levels below them and above them, giving them review on previously learned skills, and insight as to where their learning will take them next.

Our favorite aspect of multigrade is how students learn to support each other and respect the level of learning that others are working at. We love how older students take younger students under their wing to help them when they are struggling. Teaching others is the best way to master something you are trying to learn. These relationships are also reflected in free time and on the playground, where our students can be seen mixing between grade levels, very differently from single grade settings.

Is this a real school with real accreditation?

Yes, High Plains Christian School is accredited through the National Association of Private Schools. In addition, we are required to pass a comprehensive accrediting process operated by the Education Department the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. This ensures we maintain the high standard of excellence expected in all Adventist schools.

How much does it cost to attend HPCS?

The High Plains Christian School board works diligently to keep costs low so that everyone who desires a Christian education for their child can attain it. Currently tuition for the school year is $2150 for the first child enrolled, with a small discount for each child after that. Tuition can be paid up front in one sum or per semester for a small discount. Tuition can also be paid on a monthly basis.

I’ve never heard of a Seventh-day Adventist school, what do you believe/stand for?

What do students learn in Bible class?

Students participate in a daily Bible class as part of our school’s core curriculum. This Bible curriculum was created with the sole purpose of guiding students to a lifelong relationship with Jesus. Students explore various themes and stories in the Bible and are guided to see how each one demonstrates the presence of God and how he desires a relationship with us.

The units are fun and engaging, as well as deep and life changing. Even the teachers have been amazed at some of the lessons they have learned from instructing them.

Does your school have a required uniform?

Yes, we have a simple uniform and dress code. Students are required to wear a shirt with the school logo printed on it. Pants can be jeans or khaki type material. Leggings and sports shorts or pants are not school appropriate.

Are meals provided by the school?

Unfortunately we are not able to provide meals for our students. Students will need to eat breakfast at home and bring a sack lunch each day. Microwaves are available to heat up food.
